Lower school students have one lesson a week in the STEM room where they develop their capabilities in critical and creative thinking as they learn to: generate and evaluate knowledge, clarify concepts and ideas, seek possibilities, consider alternatives, and solve problems.

KSHS was well-represented at the Katanning Remembrance Day service held in town. Our school captains Leah Edwards and Dylan Quartermaine attended along with Isaac Anderson as a Katanning army cadets representative and Zavier Potter as a representative for Katanning Scouts. The students were accompanied by our Senior School Year Coordinator and HASS teacher Ms Tonga. Leah, Dylan, and Zavier laid flowers as a symbol of respect for the fallen while Isaac had the important honour of manning the flag. Our students showcased our PBS values beautifully through the solemn respect they brought to the occasion and displayed great maturity when mingling with special guests such as the Katanning Shire president and councillors.
Meanwhile, back at school, all staff and students paused their work to participate in a special service over the PA. Wade Green led the opening and conclusion of the service, explaining that Remembrance Day is a day when we remember all those who have served in conflict. Thomas Wilson-Hayden gave a special Acknowledgement of Country with recognition of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought in combat. Tiarna Clifford, Annalyce Hogan-Jackson, and Isla Maclennan gave a solemn recital of the poem “The Farmer Remembers the Somme” which tells the story of a farmer who returns from World War 1 only to mentally still see the horrors of the river Somme in France where he fought. Finally, Angel Hall led our staff and students in a minute of silence along with the Last Post, Rouse, and National Anthem. Thank you to Mr Ly for assisting our students.

🎉 First Lego League Fun in Mount Barker! 🧱🤖
On Tuesday, two enthusiastic teams of Year 8 students headed to Mount Barker to compete in the First Lego League, a highlight of their Semester Two STEM program!
The challenge? Presenting an archaeology-themed Innovation Project and programming a Lego robot to tackle tasks in three fast-paced 2.5-minute games. 🏺🕹️
Our students impressed with their teamwork, creativity, and perseverance—from preparing for the event to adapting strategies between rounds and confidently presenting to the judges. 👏
The judges praised their innovative ideas, confident delivery, and infectious enthusiasm. What an achievement!
A big thank you to Ms Duerr, Mr Burnett, and Miss Watson for making this exciting excursion possible.

WORLD TEACHERS DAY
Staff and students alike were doing double takes on World Teachers Day as a new group of teachers took over the school! Equipped with lanyards, whistles, and even knee braces, our students fully entered the spirit of “Dress up as a teacher”. It’s hard to say what costume was most memorable- was it the mini Mr Treloar complete with mohawk, Mr Pearce in formal attire, or the Mr Barley with his iconic hat? Was it the mini Mrs Allens, or the Dr Thinleys who brought class and sophistication? PE was well-represented with a mini Ms Palmer, Whitelaws, complete with drawn-on mustache, and a Ramirez crew with flared leggings and knee braces. And it was impossible to ignore that the mini Ms Buckleys and Ms Tongas stepped out in excellent style, matched by our new Clontarf team in their black shirts!
Meanwhile, our staff took a moment to share their memories of a teacher who inspired them. These were beautiful to read and reminded us why many of us have entered the profession.
Finally, our Student Leadership group teamed up with our staff Social Committee to deliver coffee, milkshakes, and cupcakes to staff. Thank you to all the staff who coordinated this effort. Our delivery team commented on how much it brightened staff’s day.
Thank you to all the teachers for the incredible work you do each day.
