Upper School

Senior Secondary Pathways at Katanning Senior High School responds dynamically to the diverse needs of our students and community by providing students with a range of pathways. Each student is set on a pathway based on their own definition of success post school, which could involve further education, training, or employment. Learning experiences are a combination of both academic and real life, tailored to encourage autonomy and responsibility.

Year 10

The structure of the Year 10 Curriculum is similar to the preceding years and builds students’ knowledge and skills across the eight learning areas. Students will have 4 sessions a week in the core learning areas of Mathematics, Science, English, Humanities & Social Sciences and Physical & Health Education.

In addition, they will be given the opportunity to study two courses per semester from the optional Learning Areas of Technologies and The Arts to complete their learning program.

Some of the options offered are:

Technologies: Design & Technology – Food & Fibre, Materials, Metals/Wood, Digital Technology

The Arts: Visual Arts, Media Arts

Please Note: The Year 10 options courses offered are dependent on a sufficient number of students choosing the course. The school’s strategic direction and business needs will determine the decision to run a particular course. Each option has a COMPULSORY charge.

Year 11 & 12

The structure of Year 11 and 12 is significantly different to Year 10 and is designed to help students achieve their West Australian Certificate of Education. Students choose up 6 course equivalents that could include a combination of Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), General and Foundation courses, Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications, and Endorsed Programs. The combination of courses will be dependent on the student’s pathway identified during the career and course counselling process. The options are many, and we strongly encourage parents and caregivers to be active participants in discussions with teachers, counsellors, and school administrators in making decisions for courses in Year 11 and 12. For guidance on VET and further information, please contact the VET, Careers & WPL (Work Place Learning) team.
