The Inclusive Learning classroom at Katanning Senior High School is a small program doing big things. We enrol students residing in Katanning and surrounding areas and specialise in delivering educational programs designed to improve outcomes for students with a diagnosed intellectual/physical disability and those who require additional learning support.
‘Dignity and Respect’ underpins the operations of the inclusive classroom. Our school community has the right and responsibility to uphold these principles. Our core values are reflected in the school rules and staff code of conduct. Every student can learn, and our program reflects the best evidence-based practice and an individualised approach to student learning.
Our students are aged from Year 7 to Year 12. Our Education Assistants support students in the mainstream classes of the school and small groups in the inclusive learning classroom. The student’s individual needs are a priority when placing students in mainstream classrooms, and we strive for the most personal approach to student learning. To help us achieve our purpose, an Individual Education Program (IEP) is developed for each student. An IEP is a working document that identifies the student’s academic, physical, social and emotional needs. It is a realistic plan for successfully educating students with special learning needs. There are many steps to designing an individual program, and we value parents as partners in investigating these steps in our attempt to achieve a relevant and achievable program for your child.
The students associated with the Inclusive Learning Classroom have their curriculum based on their individual learning needs. We focus on developing the students’ literacy and numeracy skills, as well as preparing students for life after school through social skills, life skills and everyday communication skills. Students also acquire an awareness of personal dignity in a positive, comfortable, and safe environment.
